Who We Are

Founded in 1998, the Institute for Convergent Software Integrated Systems — ICONS — is a research institute at Vanderbilt University. Nearly three decades on, having navigated multiple technology waves and funding cycles, the Institute remains robust, growing, and impactful — the result of talented researchers and of deliberate planning that has both shaped and responded to evolving national research directions.

A Name Built to Last

At our founding we could have taken a name from the technological frontier of the late 1990s — “Model-Based Software Engineering,” say, or “Model Integrated Computing.” We chose otherwise. Technology waves are transient: they reflect the how of a given moment rather than the what. Our aspiration then, as now, was to understand and engineer highly complex (mega-)systems that are safe, secure, and resilient. “Software Integrated Systems” named something more persistent — that computing is becoming the universal glue for system integration. That has held.

What Has Changed

Our focus is still complex, multi-faceted systems: how we understand them, how we build them, how we operate them. What has changed profoundly is the meaning of the word system. In late-1990s parlance, a system was a small computer network and the embedded software stack for signal processing, control, and mission computing. Today, a system is a physical highway shared by human drivers, city planners, AI-driven vehicles, instrumentation that observes traffic flows, and decision systems that guide it efficiently and safely. It is a patient with a mental health disorder, whose underlying conditions we model to offer decision support for diagnosis and treatment selection. It is a constellation of autonomous vehicles and agents that assist warfighters on mission.

Our methods have widened to match: model-based, deductive, and symbolic approaches, increasingly combined with data-driven, inductive, generative, and neural-AI-based approaches.

Why Convergent

This change is not merely one of scale. It is deeper: it lies in the cross-cutting domains and disciplines that must come together to design, operate, and evolve these systems. Design concerns may be separated for purposes of reasoning and organization, but they cannot be treated as independent where the behavior of the system emerges from their interaction. Such systems are still software-integrated — at least the engineered ones — but, more importantly, they are convergent, drawing together disciplines that have historically stood apart.

We have seen convergence first-hand since cyber-physical systems emerged as a vibrant research area in the late 2000s, a field we helped define and to which we have made fundamental contributions. The theme has grown only more resonant as advances in predictive and generative AI make new domains accessible.

Incorporating convergence into our name — from ISIS to ICONS — recognizes that evolution and states our commitment to cross-disciplinarity: our willingness and ability to work collaboratively across disciplines and institutions, from computing and engineering to medicine and policy. It is a subtle change, deliberately so, and in that subtlety a confident assertion grounded in a clear-eyed perspective on our past and a vision for the future. Within this framework we will continue to innovate and to organize our research thrusts as priorities and technologies evolve — aspiring always to produce outcomes that are iconic.
